Everyone Deserves #CleanWater

Safe accessible water is essential for the health of every individual. In fact, it can be a matter of life and death. However, nearly one billion people do not have access to clean, safe water; and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), water scarcity affects 1 in 3 people in the African Region!

Many who have easy access to clean water cannot fathom the mental and physical stress faced by those who do not. Have you ever tried going an entire day without clean water? Or walking over 30 minutes away from home to fetch clean water and then all the way back with a jerrycan weighing anything between 40 - 70 pounds? Now imagine doing this every day for 3 hours (or more) in a day, and then having to manage the water you retrieved with your entire family. It is not a life anyone hopes for but one that is experienced by millions.

CLEAN WATER SAVES LIVES

According to the UN, Sub-Saharan Africa alone loses 40 billion hours per year collecting water. Furthermore, women and children are responsible for the collection in 80% of households without access to water in the premises. This is the time that children could spend in school, and women could spend at work. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that clean water is one of the leading causes of poverty in the African region.

But why is clean water so important? And what happens when contaminated water is consumed instead? Contaminated water causes diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. WHO estimates that “842,000 people die every year from diarrhea as a result of unsafe drinking-water, sanitation, and hand hygiene”. Additionally, we lose about 361,000 children under the age of 5 to diarrhea each year ----a disease that is easily preventable.

With clean water, we can save the lives of millions and lift thousands of communities out of poverty. With easy access to clean water, children could spend their time getting a valuable education and mothers could go to work or tend to their homes. Everyone deserves clean water!
